what we do

African Islands Business Council

AIS Regional Knowledge

We have a deeper knowledge of the vulnerability to adverse impacts of climate change particularly the increasingly frequent and extreme weather phenomena which represent the gravest of threats to the survival and viability of local communities, natural ecosystems, and overall sustainable development and growth of AIS. We remain focused and committed to our core objectives of fostering climate action, exploring and utilizing alternative investment vehicles to enhance private sector growth and competitiveness, foster inclusive growth, empower businesses, improve legal and regulatory frameworks, enhance research capacity, provide technical assistance and drive sustainable economic development across the AIS.

AIS Regional Governance and Climate Action

We understand and recognize AIS regions’ challenges when it comes to climate action, governance and significant barriers related to accessing finance, cost of capital, market readiness, upskilling and reskilling workforces needed for a just, inclusive and resilient energy transition. We work to improve governance for local communities, private sector and climate action particularly in areas like policy, legal and regulatory frameworks that encourage businesses and local communities to take climate action.

Diaspora Investment Outreach

AiBC embarks on frequent investment and support outreach across the globe. Our investment outreach approach is strategically targeted at AIS in particular and Africa diaspora communities in general introducing and exposing the opportunities in the AIS regions and encourage them to invest in their communities. Owing to their small size, geographical remoteness, highly dispersed populations, the limited scale and undiversified nature of their economies, high dependence on external markets, and the effects of climate change, we recognize and understand that the AIS region can no longer rely only on the international financial architecture to fully address their unique development needs and make accessing concessional finance easier for them, which could mitigate their fiscal constraints.

Diaspora Investment Outreach

International Events and Forums

We are actively involved in organizing, contributing and participating in major international conferences across Small Islands Developing States and beyond to make sure AIS diaspora is part of the conversation shaping the sustainable development, resilient prosperity and future of the AIS region and provide networking opportunities with stakeholders and businesses from other regions. Because we organize, participate in and promote international forums, investment conferences and other events across Africa and beyond, we do not only showcase opportunities and put AIS on the spotlight; we also create an avenue for networking opportunities with stakeholders and businesses from other regions.

Through our annual events, AiBC brings together AIS regions’ diaspora businesses, policy and development experts leveraging North-South, AIS-to-AIS, South-South cooperation including SIDS-to-SIDS to mobilize human, financial, technical and technological resources towards sustainable development and resilient prosperity of the AIS communities.
